Miter Setup

We used this technique in a recent project in Workbench magazine when we needed to cut a 45 degree miter on the end of a piece of aluminum angle stock. It was quick, easy, and very accurate.

Start by attaching a wood auxiliary fence to the miter gauge. Then set the miter gauge fence to 45 degrees.

Before you cut the workpiece, first turn on the saw and cut a kerf in the auxiliary fence (Fig. a) slightly deeper than the thickness of the workpiece. Now you know precisely where the saw blade will cut through the fence.

To make the miter cut, align the cut mark on your workpiece with the kerf in the fence, and cut the miter (Fig. b).
